It is important to remember the history
of past encampments. Where have we been, where have we come from, and where
are we going. Although CAP encampments have
been the proving ground and primary training evens for CAP cadets since
the 1940s, the Joint Dakota Cadet Encampment began in 1987 when Lt Col Paul
Meyers held an Encampment at Devil's Lake, ND and 25 cadets attended
encampment from ND Wing. In 1988, South Dakota joined the fun and
the encampment expanded to 50 cadets (25 from ND and 25 from SD).
Since this time, the encampment has grown and changed.
Historically, JDCE has been held at either Camp Rapid Army Post in Rapid
City, SD or Camp Grafton Army Base, Devil's Lake, ND rotating year
after year. The encampment has also rotated in its emphasis on
leadership to emergency services. There have also been many tours
of Grand Forks, AFB and Ellsworth AFB, Mount Rushmore, and other
landmarks. JDCE is the main proving ground where Dakota Cadets
come when they are up for a challenge.
